Zurich pax up +3.4% to 2m as 11-month sales hit $42.8m

Zurich Airport generated 2,088,637 passengers in November, up +3.4% compared with the same month last year, while total turnover from commercial activities reached CHF42.4m ($42.8m) in the period, as the first 11 months returned CHF524m ($529m).
Total airside commercial sales (retail, duty free and F&B) grew by +8.7%, while landside improved by 3.4%, as turnover spend per departing passenger totalled CHF40.60 ($41) rising by +2.9%.
Airside expenditure rose +5.1% during the month [landside spending was flat during the month-Ed].
HEALTHY COMMERCIAL SALES
In terms of traffic, local passenger numbers increased by +5.2% to 1,456,469 in November 2017, while the transfer rate dropped by -1.3 percentage points to 30% compared to November 2016 – translating into a minus-0.8% fall to 626,096 passengers.
By contrast, November 2017 air traffic movements increased to 20,303 (+0.7 % vs. previous year) with the average passenger per movement figure increased to 117.1 (+3.7% vs. previous year). The average seat load factor was 73.2% (+0.2 percentage points vs. previous year).
In November 2017, a total of 44’586 tons of freight were transported at Zurich, corresponding to a volume increase of 15.4% compared to last year.
WORTHY CHARITABLE INITIATIVE
Meanwhile, in other news, both airport and Dufry management also reported this month that ‘Zurich Duty Free mineral water’ (sold in the duty-free shops) raised a total of CHF328,453 ($331,740) in the form of a cheque to support the Smiling Gecko charity which helps needy children in Cambodia.
Smiling Gecko is the second organisation which Flughafen Zürich AG and Dufry AG support after Pro Juventute, which supports children, adolescents and their parents’ in Switzerland.
The cheque for Smiling Gecko was presented by Stefan Gross, Chief Commercial Officer of Flughafen Zürich AG and Ekaterina Herzig, General Manager Switzerland of Dufry AG.
