Zurich traffic and sales fall

Zurich Airport handled 1,845,671 passengers in May representing a decline of 5.7% versus May 2008, while total turnover, or net sales to consumers from commercial activities fell by 6.3% to Swf.39.1m ($36m).

Airport management reports that year-to-date (YTD) passenger numbers decreased by 5%, while transfer passengers were down by 2.7% to 658,624 in May (YTD +0.2%). O&D or local passengers (originating or departing from Zurich) fell by 7.4% to 1,178,919 in May, compared with the same month last year.

The airport said that the current low-cost carrier market share for the month was 10.7% (YTD 9.8%), showing a decrease in passenger figures of 7.7% (YTD -9.2%) versus the previous period.

Total turnover, or net sales to consumers during May reached Swf.39.1m ($36m) representing minus 6.3% versus May 2008, while turnover per departing passenger in May reached Swf.42.40 ($39.11) which was 0.7% below the number recorded last May.
