Attacks kill off tourism in Sri Lanka

By Administrator |

Fears are rising that yesterday's attack on a military bus which killed 99 people in Sri Lanka could derail peace talks between the government and Tamil Tigers.

Months of work to try and get both parties around the table at the end of this month seemed to have paid off until the attack, which the Sri Lankan Government has condemned.
The Tamil Tigers have neither confirmed or denied the attack, but have said it was ‘justified’, pointing to continued air strikes on Tamil Tiger homelands by the Sri Lankan air force.
Tourism in Sri Lanka has effectively ground to a halt following a spate of attacks which have left many dead and led to foreign offices in many countries issuing warnings that the country is not safe for tourists.
Colombo Airport duty free concessionaire Alpha Orient Lanka reports that there is effectively no tourism into the country at present and had been hoping that late bookings to the country would rescue an otherwise dire year for arrivals.
