Bandaranaike Airport permits select travellers to return to duty free arrivals

A new scheme allows certain passengers at Sri Lanka’s Bandaranaike International Airport to shop arrivals duty free.

Eliglbe travellers that missed out on the chance to shop arrivals duty free at Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) earlier this year due to coronavirus-related restrictions can now do so.

Passengers who arrived in Sri Lanka *between 9 March and 31 May and had to go to quarantine centres are able to visit the arrivals duty free shopping complex from today (6 July), according to government-owned Airport & Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) limited.

Shoppers will need to present various forms of documentation and identification to gain access to the shops.

They can benefit from arrivals duty free shopping daily between 08:30 and 15:30 and can browse from electrical and electronic household appliances, wines & spirits, perfumes, chocolate and other goods.

Arrivals-BIA-checks

Arriving passengers follow strict health checks, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests carried out by health authorities. 

Those with Sri Lankan passports are granted a duty free arrivals allowance based on their period of time abroad, while foreigners (except those with a resident visa) are permitted to buy liquor and cigarettes.
