Radico Khaitan sees global travel retail sales exceed pre-pandemic levels

Radico Khaitan’s Sanjeev Banga has reported that GTR sales now exceed pre-pandemic levels.

India-based spirits giant Radico Khaitan has seen its travel retail sales exceed 2019 figures, as it hones its focus on Rampur single malt whisky and Jaisalmer gin.

Through key partnerships with Dufry and Gebr. Heinemann, the producer is using the channel to ‘play around a lot’, according to Sanjeev Banga, President International Business at Radico Khaitan.

“The travel recovery is huge.” he told TRBusiness. “And I can say about India – the airports, the flights… everything is jam-packed. Travel is on a big rise and we have already passed the pre-Covid levels.”

While he didn’t give sales figures, he cited Copenhagen, Dubai and locations across the Indian subcontinent as particularly important for the single malt and gin brands.

Radico Khaitan first entered the global travel retail market in 2016. Its Magic Moments vodka has also previously been a focus in the channel. 

Banga added: “We’re getting into a lot of other travel retail [locations] because it’s a window that gives you exposure to travellers and consumers around the world. It’s a very important channel.”

Radico Khaitan is in the process of commissioning a new green-field distillery complex that will result in it ranking as the second-largest alcohol producer in the world by volume. 

The comments come as a number of airports confirm passenger traffic is now close to pre-pandemic levels.

Earlier this week, London’s Heathrow Airport said 26 February was the busiest single day at Terminal 5 since Christmas 2019. Meanwhile, December 2022 marked the first time since January 2020 that passenger traffic passed the 7m mark at Dubai International
