‘Adapt & Survive’ video series: Vantage Airport Group

By Luke Barras-hill |

ADAPT-AND-SURVIVE-Sammy-Patel-460x306In this edition of ‘Adapt & Survive’, Vantage Airport Group Vice President Commercial Sammy Patel reflects on the astonishing – and devastating – pace of change across the air transport sector since March, when Covid-19 was declared a global pandemic.

March was also a month in which the Group closed on virtually zero passenger traffic across its network, TRBusiness hears.

Patel says the company, which over the past 25 years has developed and managed in excess of 30 airports around the world and boasts a current portfolio stretching across four continents, continues to work closely with its partners to mitigate against further losses, while ensuring the safety of staff and passengers.

“We do see some light at the end of the tunnel and have some movement at a number of our airports,” says Patel. “Cyprus, The Bahamas and Jamaica airports are reopening thanks to some of the border restrictions that are easing.

“In the US, we are seeing domestic passengers recovering far quicker than international traffic and that is certainly the case for our operation in Chicago (Midway International Airport) and New York (LaGuardia Airport).”

BUSY PROJECT PIPELINE

As reported, Vantage announced last week it had been selected by Amtrak – the National Railroad Passenger Corporation – to develop and manage the commercial overhaul of William H. Gray III 30th Street Station in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Patel discusses the commercial vision behind this, alongside the new Departures and Arrivals hall at LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B, which opened earlier this month.

TRBusiness also learns that Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, Jamaica has awarded contracts for a number of bids as part of its redevelopment phase.

Vantage Airport Group holds an equity stake in Sangster International Airport’s operator MBJ Airports.

It is reliably understood that the winning parties have been notified by letter and confirmations are expected this week. More on this story as the details emerge.

The TRBusiness ‘Adapt and Survive’ Skype video interview series is a direct response to the industry’s critical need for direct, factual and analytical commentary and – in typical TRBusiness fashion – interprets clearly and concisely the challenges faced by travel retail during Covid-19.

Adapt & Survive asks members of the travel retail industry community, often working from home, for their candid commentary on the constantly evolving Covid-19 pandemic.
