Back to Black for Distell Group’s Black Bottle Scotch whisky

By Caroline Sargent |

After a century long break, the famous Black Bottle blend of single malt and grain whiskies has returned to its distinctive black bottle packaging. In keeping with the history of the Aberdeen Scotch, Distell Group has also revised the recipe to bring the liquor more in line with its original 1879 roots.

Fresh and floral on the nose with whiffs of new-sawn oak and a hint of smoke, the rich blend opens onto a silky palate with delicate smoke and peat balanced by sweet oak and honey, to end on a lingering finish of spice.

“Complex but approachable, it offers an excellent balance between richness and smokiness and a great texture. It’s also very versatile and can be enjoyed neat or with a mixer, which is why aficionados and newcomers are responding with such keen approval,” says Distell’s brand spokesperson for duty-free, Robyn Bradshaw.

She adds, “The revised look and blend offer a more authentic version of Black Bottle’s history and were rigorously researched before the recent introduction to rave reviews.”

Black Bottle’s retro-expression won the World’s Best Relaunch Award at this year’s World Whisky Design Awards.

After a positive reception in the UK, Russia and the Baltic States, the new Black Bottle is to be introduced to France and Germany this autumn and will reach the US by winter. Exclusive to travel retail, a 1 litre format will be launched in November.

Distell Group will be sampling Black Bottle and welcoming visitors to its stand at the upcoming TFWA World Exhibition & Conference this October in Cannes.
