Experienced industry executive Jaya Singh has been elected as the new President of Tax Free World Association (TFWA) on a one-year term.
The former APTRA President and current Managing Director of Mondelez World Travel Retail, European Export & Switzerland was elected today following a TFWA Management Committee vote.
Singh fended off competition from incumbent President Alain Maingreaud, who was running for a third term, and other challenger Melvin Broekaart.
TRBusiness was aware through conversations with industry sources in the lead-up to the election that Singh – confirmed to this publication as a runner for the presidency alongside Broekaart – was a strong contender for the post given his critical experience in DF&TR working on behalf of several associations.
As APTRA President for four years (2013-2017), Singh was a passionate and tireless advocate for industry change in the Asia Pacific region.
Skilled in advocacy, negotiation and policy making, he is well versed in lobbying on behalf of the industry’s interests, experience that will stand him in excellent stead as TFWA President.
During his tenure as APTRA President, he helped to drive more proactive engagement with the region’s airports, with the inaugural APTRA Airports Forum launched under his stewardship in 2017.
As a vocal presence at major industry events, Singh was also instrumental in fostering more open lines of communication with national governments, customs authorities, other travel and tourism stakeholders and within the industry where he helped to develop APTRA’s Responsible Retail Training Programme.
In his current position heading up confectionery giant Mondelez International’s travel retail operations, Singh is responsible for a multi-million dollar business.
He has held a number of senior level positions at Mondelez International where he has spent almost 17 years, 15 years of which have been spent within the travel retail division.
Singh is a former Board member of the Duty Free World Council and a current member of TFWA’s Management Committee.
“It is a great privilege to be elected as TFWA President and I would like to thank all Management Committee members for their support and trust,” said Singh. “I also thank my predecessor Alain Maingreaud for his important contribution as President over the past two years.
“As we face the most serious crisis ever to hit our industry, I am determined to work with our Board, Management Committee, staff and partners to ensure we play a central role in the recovery of the duty free & travel retail sector over the year ahead.”
In a statement, TFWA added: “TFWA would like to thank Alain Maingreaud for his hard work and dedication to the industry, in his recent role as President as well as his previous contribution as Managing Director and member of the TFWA team for over 20 years.”
