Consumer-voted Travel Retail Awards 2020 walks the talk on sustainability
By Michael Barrett |
TRBusiness is taking significant steps to further reduce its plastic and carbon footprint at the Travel Retail Awards, the industry’s only consumer-voted awards. The 2020 event will see sustainably-produced trophies presented for the first time.
The esteemed winners of this year’s awards will be walking away, not only with the accolade of being voted the best in their category by a panel of over 5,000 independent judges – all travelling consumers from around the globe – they will also be presented with a prestigious shiny, sustainable trophy.
The new-look, eco-friendly trophies (pictured) are made from recycled polished aluminium and mirrored recycled acrylic. The aluminium is recycled from used gas and water pipes.
The ‘greenification’ of the 2020 TRBusiness Travel Retail Awards will be also present through sustainably produced gift bags.
GREEN GIFTING
The bags will be provided by Duty Free Innovation, one of the Awards Platinum Partners, which specialises in eco-friendly shopping bags for Duty Free retailers.
Certified 91% rPET, the bags are made from recycled plastic bottles, meaning for every bag used, fewer plastic bottles will end up in the ocean and pollute the eco-system.
Every guest at the Awards dinner, which will be held on Tuesday 12 May at The Conrad Hotel, Singapore, will take away their own recycled and reusable gift bag, filled with special gifts kindly provided by the Awards sponsors.
One of the focal points of the move to more sustainable awards is the introduction of the Best Green Initiative at at an Airport Award, new this year.
TRBusiness has received overwhelming interest and response to this new award, with entries being submitted from all over the world from across all sectors. Airports, retailers, food and beverage concessions, brands and other companies operating in the airport retail sector have been submitting their respective environmental initiatives.
THE CONSUMER CHOICE
TRBusiness Owners Nigel Hardy and Janice Hook say it’s going to be a closely fought contest to determine which will be the best green initiative, as voted by consumers.
“The beauty of consumer-voted awards is not only the fact that the accolade of winning is truly deserved as they are totally independently and impartially judged by thousands of travelling consumers,” said Hardy.
“It’s also because we together with a panel of industry colleagues, are not burdened with having to make the choice ourselves, as to who deserves to win.”
“It’s refreshing and rewarding to see the innovation that is going on in the sustainability field,” added Hook. “Looking at the entries that have come in so far, I would find it extremely difficult to choose a winner.
“I’m delighted and relieved to know that the winners are the consumers’ choice, not ours. We’re really looking forward to celebrating all these initiatives on 12 May.”
Entries to the 2020 TRBusiness Travel Retail Awards close in just over one week, on Friday 31 January.
