Distell backs 2020 Travel Retail Awards & charity partners as new sponsor
By Charlotte Turner |
Distell Global Travel Retail is the latest company to announce its support of the 2020 Travel Retail Awards, as a Platinum Sponsor of the only consumer-voted awards dedicated to the duty free and travel retail industry.
Travel retail is Distell International’s third largest division and with the appointment of Rachel Hawes as Head of Marketing for Global Travel Retail, in August, the company underlined its commitment to stepping up the global development of its brands (Amarula, Bunnahabhain and Nederburg wines) and increased focus on enhancing the customer journey in DF&TR.
As reported in September, contenders for the only consumer-voted awards in the travel retail industry can now submit their entries for the 2020 event.
The second edition of the awards programme this year saw a marked surge in interest with double-digit growth in the number of participating companies, in recognition of the awards’ legitimacy following the successful launch of the consumer awards in 2018.
THIRD EDITION IN 2020
The third edition in 2020 is expected to attract even more interest; the awards programme and ceremony, which takes place in Singapore in May during the annual TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition and Conference, is now firmly established as one of the major events in the industry calendar.

Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai (BOM) and Mumbai Duty Free picked up the award for Best Airport for ‘sense of place’, in May earlier this year.
As announced in July, the 2020 Travel Retail Awards will see three game-changing new categories: Best Green Initiative at an Airport, Best Airport Food and Beverage Offer and Best Cruise Ship Retailer.
Nominations for the Best Green Initiative at an Airport can be submitted by the airport or any of its commercial partners including retailers and food and beverage operators.
“Distell Global Travel Retail is delighted to sponsor TRBusiness’ third Travel Retail Awards which, since their inception, have helped bring the industry closer to shoppers,” says Luke Maga, Managing Director, Distell GTR.
“As a company which has a growing global travel retail presence, we’re committed to better understanding customers’ behaviour in the channel and meeting their needs appropriately.
AWARDS WITH A CONSCIENCE
The 2020 Travel Retail Awards will support two environmental charities, which will be announced in the coming weeks.

Luke Maga, Managing Director, Distell GTR.
“With CSR an integral part of Distell’s overall strategy, we’re also pleased to announce that we’ll be donating £5,000 to two environmental organisations that will benefit from funds raised at the 2020 Travel Retail Awards,” adds Maga.
Charlotte Turner, Editorial Director, TRBusiness says: “We are thrilled that Distell have confirmed their support for the 2020 Travel Retail Awards; particularly pertinent in the year we are placing a greater focus on sustainability and connected environmental concerns, through the launch of the Best Green Initiative by an Airport award, in addition to the creation of the Travel Retail Sustainability Forum (TRSF) and the TR Plastic Pledge.
“Distell is totally aligned with TRBusiness (and TRSF co-founder Duty Free Innovation) in encouraging the DF&TR industry to move towards a more sustainable future, including the use of more ethically-sourced ingredients and reducing single-use plastics, among many other initiatives.”
The Travel Retail Awards are organised in partnership with Swiss research agency m1nd-set, the industry’s leading consumer insights company. A panel of more than 5000 consumers, recruited from m1nd-set’s database of international travellers judge each award category for both the products and airports awards.
