Dr. Jennifer Cords appointed Director at Gebr. Heinemann

The experienced Dr. Jennifer Cords will spearhead a newly created business unit at Gebr. Heinemann.

Dr. Jennifer Cords has joined Gebr. Heinemann as its new Director Corporate Affairs, Business Compliance & Corporate Responsibility.

Dr. Cords officially started in her new role last week, with Heinemann announcing the appointment internally during its annual strategy day (6 September) where the Hamburg-based travel retailer meets with its suppliers.

TRBusiness was aware of the move and was in contact with Cords earlier this week.

In a statement released yesterday, Heinemann says the appointment will ‘sharpen’ its political profile by drawing on Cords’ extensive experience in campaigning, communication, public and corporate affairs in global duty free.

The respected industry executive stepped down as Head of Corporate Affairs and Compliance at Imperial Brands in the summer following nearly eight years at the company in which she also acted as their representative in various duty free associations including as a Board Member of APTRA and a Member of the Management Committee of TFWA.

Her newly created role feeds into Gebr. Heinemann’s developing corporate social responsibility agenda, with its stated aim to become the ‘first choice in travel retail and the first choice in sustainable business’.

It is fully expected that Cords will play a vital role in driving forward Heinemann’s evolving activities and responsibilities in this arena and the way these play out in collaboration with its partners, customers, suppliers and employees.

Commenting on the appointment, Kay Spanger, Executive Director Purchasing, Logistics and Fulfillment said: “Jennifer Cords has a profound track record as political action leader in various countries in which Gebr. Heinemann operates. We are convinced that she will invest her experience in a profitable way for Gebr. Heinemann.

“We want to be part of a sustainable value chain in which we work closely with our suppliers and partners, collaboratively setting and performing to high environmental and social standards and championing best practice in the market. Systematic CR management is critical to our success. And that’s why the restructuring of our CR management in the new business unit ‘Corporate Affairs’ is simply a logical next step.”

Adding her thoughts, Cords said: “I am looking forward to serving the only family-owned company among the global players in the travel retail industry. Even though the position has been newly created, I won’t have to start from scratch establishing the business unit.

“I would like to explicitly thank Torsten Ehlers, Head of Business Compliance, who has successfully established the Business Compliance Department for Gebr. Heinemann as well as Head of Corporate Communications Lara Vitzthum and her team for building up a systematic Corporate Responsibility management for the company.”

Dr. Cords will attend the upcoming TFWA World Exhibition & Conference next month.
