The ripple effect of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is playing out in the wines & spirits markets where travel retail suppliers have prohibited sales and manufacturing.

Leading Nordic firm Anora, born following the merger between Altia Plc and Arcus ASA in 2020 and responsible for brands such as Koskenkorva, Linie, Larsen, Skagerrak, Chill Out, Ruby Zin, Wongraven, O.P. Anderson and Falling Feather, has suspended sales to Russia.

It will make a *donation of €50,000/$55,916 to the Ukrainian Red Cross in support of the country’s people.

“We are deeply concerned about the situation in Ukraine and want to offer our support to the Ukrainian people,” said CEO Pekka Tennilä in a statement.

US STATES REACT

Ukraine’s own Nemiroff Vodka, which has production facilities in Nemyriv, Vinnytsia, has revoked its licence to manufacture products in Russia with legal documents filed yesterday (28 February).

The distillery in Nemyriv, which has a history spanning 150 years, is the primary supplier of the brand’s products to duty free and more than 80 countries.

Nemiroff has cancelled the licence to manufacture its products in Russia.

Yuri Sorochinsky, CEO of Nemiroff, said: “Nemiroff is proud to be Ukrainian.

“We condemn military aggression and encroachment on the territorial integrity of Ukraine. Today we are all united to defend freedom and the independence of Ukraine. This is our land, our people, our future.”

In separate but related news, several US states have reacted to the invasion by curbing the sale of Russian products such as vodka.

On Saturday (26 February), Ohio Governor Mike DeWine directed the state’s department of commerce to cease the purchase and sale of all vodka made by Russian Standard.

Utah and New Hampshire have issued executive orders instructing outlets to remove all Russian-produced and Russian-branded products from shelves immediately.

Other states such as West Virginia and Pennyslvania have also joined the boycott.
