Record year for Heathrow

Heathrow handled its busiest day ever on 1 August, with more than 270,000 passengers.

Heathrow ended 2025 on a high, recording its busiest year ever as passenger numbers surpassed 84 million for the first time in the airport’s history. December proved to be the strongest month on record, with almost 7.2 million passengers travelling through the UK’s main hub.

The year was marked by several operational milestones. Heathrow handled its busiest day ever on 1 August, when more than 270,000 passengers passed through the airport. Overall, traffic outperformed 2024 in nine of the twelve months, reinforcing Heathrow’s position as the world’s most connected hub airport and expanding choice for travellers and airline partners alike.

Operational performance also strengthened. In December, Heathrow retained its status as Europe’s most punctual hub airport, with more than 97% of passengers clearing security in under five minutes. Baggage performance improved to a load rate of over 98% across the year, placing an additional 250,000 bags on their intended flights compared with 2024 and contributing to smoother journeys for passengers.

Cargo volumes also reached new highs. In December alone, Heathrow handled 138,000 tonnes of cargo, with three individual days ranking among the airport’s busiest of 2025. Across the year, total cargo volumes increased by 12,600 tonnes year on year, further cementing Heathrow’s role as the UK’s largest port by value.

Retail performance reflected the strong passenger flow, with an item sold at World Duty Free every 5.5 seconds during the festive period.

Looking ahead, Heathrow plans to invest more than £1.3 billion in 2026 to further enhance service levels and the passenger experience.

Thomas Woldbye, CEO of Heathrow Airport, said: “December’s record-breaking performance shows the strength of demand for Heathrow and the benefit to passengers of the great service our colleagues are providing. Last year, there was no hub airport in Europe that was more punctual than Heathrow and we look forward to building on that success in 2026. With the Government’s support for our expansion plans, and the right regulatory framework from the CAA to secure private investment, we can unlock even more of that connectivity, trade and economic growth for the UK.”
