NEW: TR Plastic Pledge & TR Sustainability Forum

By Charlotte Turner |

Plastic-Pledge-and-Travel-Retail-Sustainability-Forum-leadResponding to an increase in consumer-led environmental activism, TRBusiness, in association with Duty Free Innovation (DFI), is launching two pioneering initiatives to help the duty free & travel retail industry combat its impacts on the environment, including plastic pollution.

Consumers are no longer in the dark about the harmful effects of single-use plastics and as such are demanding that every industry makes a concerted effort to Reduce, Re-use and Recycle. The duty free and travel retail industry carries no exception.

Therefore TRBusiness and Duty Free Innovation (DFI) are challenging this industry to significantly Reduce, Re-use and Recycle plastic, by signing up to the TR Plastic Pledge here, and joining a worldwide alliance which aims to coordinate a long overdue ‘green’ movement through the Travel Retail Sustainability Forum (TRSF).

Please find links to the TRSF Facebook and Linkedin pages here. To join the conversation on Twitter use #TRSF or #TRSustainabilityForum.

MORE PLASTIC THAN FISH IN OUR OCEANS…

As we are all acutely aware, the impacts of plastic pollution are many and varied, made more difficult to combat due to the world’s reliance on disposable plastic packaging, which is overwhelming our planet.

According to the Plastic Pollution Coalition, by 2050, the oceans will contain more plastic than fish by weight and it’s also a fact that even babies are now born pre-polluted.

All DF&TR stakeholders have a responsibility to take action to make a difference. The plastic pledge is an opportunity for the industry to react now like DFI has.

Embracing the challenge to reduce single use plastic in travel retail, DFI is already playing its part with its objective to save 1 billion plastic bottles from landfill by 2025.

Its range of certified 91% rPET recycled products directly prevent plastic bottles from reaching landfill. DFI is working closely with retailers and airports to replace all of their single-use plastic bags with a premium range of 100% environmentally-friendly and sustainable shopping bags.

For its part, TRBusiness has replaced the magazine’s plastic postage bag with a new 100% oxo-biogradable sleeve. In addition, the paper we use originates from responsibly managed and sustainable forests and is FSC certified, which means that anyone can trace where our paper has come from and see that new trees have been planted.

Together, TRBusiness and DFI are encouraging all stakeholders to align with this mission to reduce, to re-use and to recycle plastic from the supply chain. By signing up to this pledge and promising to play your own part in saving our planet and all its occupants, you also have the opportunity to join a conversation on all environmental matters, facilitated by the Travel Retail Sustainability Forum (TRSF).

By sharing your experiences and the lessons you learn along the way, you can help to educate all industry stakeholders on greener ways of operating.

We need to do more for our planet: Reduce, Re-use and Recycle plastic, by signing up to the TR Plastic Pledge here.
