Tax Free World Association (TFWA) Managing Director John Rimmer will leave his role and TFWA from 30 October, it has been announced.
In a brief statement circulated today (11 August), the association simply confirmed that Rimmer “has decided to step down”.
The search for a replacement has commenced, with an announcement to be made “in due course”.
TFWA declined to comment further when approached by TRBusiness.
The statement paid tribute to Rimmer’s tenure as MD at TFWA, during which time – with the support of his team, the Board and Management Committee – he has successfully developed and grown the association’s two major exhibitions and its other activities.
“John has also managed to steer the association through the difficult and turbulent period of the pandemic, and will be leaving at a time when the association is in a strong position to develop further and indeed to meet future challenges,” read the statement.
Rimmer is expected to be present at the TFWA World Exhibition & Conference (1-5 October), TRBusiness gathers.
Experienced and well-regarded within industry circles, Rimmer joined the duty free and travel retail industry in 2000 as a reporter for Duty Free News International, going on to become its Editor.
In 2006, he relocated to Paris to join Aelia as Deputy Director of Business Development.
After returning to the UK four years later to take on a role at the (formerly known) Moodie Report, Rimmer took up the post of Conference, Research and Corporate Affairs Director at TFWA in Paris in 2012, before ascending to Managing Director in 2017.
Erik Juul-Mortensen, President, TFWA said: “On behalf of the Management Committee, the Board and the entire team at TFWA, I would like to thank John for his valuable contribution to the development and success of TFWA since he joined, and wish him every success going forward.”
