Jonathan Corbett joins The East India Company to lead travel retail growth

By Luke Barras-hill |

Jonathan Corbett is the new Vice President of B2B Sales and Business development at The East India Company.

The East India Company has recruited experienced DF&TR executive Jonathan Corbett as Vice President of B2B Sales and Business development, effective immediately.

A familiar face within industry circles, the current Chairman of the UK-based Travel Retail Consortium has more than two decades’ experience in travel retail, having previously served as Sales Director for Compass Supply Solutions and Sales and Operations Manager for CG Hibbert.

Many will also recognise Corbett for his previous company The Wandering Monkey, which was founded in 2004 and supplied toys, activities and games across all travel retail channels.

SCALING UP TRAVEL RETAIL OPPORTUNITIES

Corbett will be tasked with growing the profile and exposure of The East India Company in global travel retail and duty free by leveraging the trading company’s powerful history.

Corbett confirms The East India Company is seeking to approach all sectors within fine food, confectionery and tea and has a premium range to offer buyers.

“I’m really excited about the opportunity and journey ahead with The East India Company,” Corbett told TRBusiness in an interview

“The aim is to introduce to premium outlets in the travel retail market and look at not only supply but JV retail opportunities. The East India Company brand is a historical brand with over 400 years of history that has been re-invented for today’s world with a range of fine foods, confectionery and teas for the global traveller.

“My previous experience in travel retail has really helped in giving me a multi-category and multi-channel overview of the duty free and travel retail market.

“My 360-degree viewpoint of business has always helped with managing and understanding the product journey and lifecycle from creation to inception and then consumer purchase. In my new role, this will be invaluable when breaking into new markets and working with new customers.”

Sanjiv Mehta, Chairman of The East India Company.

Sanjiv Mehta, Chairman of The East India Company, said: “We are very pleased to welcome Jonathan to the team. He brings a wealth of experience and a diverse set of skills.

“We are looking forward to expanding further into the travel retail and duty free market internationally and spreading the message of The East India Company re-invented.”

Jonathan Corbett was the subject of a TRBusiness ‘TR Talent Pool Profile’ video last year, which can be viewed by clicking here.

In previous conversation with TRBusiness, Corbett was asked how he thinks the DF&TR industry should adapt and survive following a tumultuous period.

More than one year on, Corbett believes that while there remains a long way to go on the path to recovery the industry is equipped with a ‘certain tenacity’ to drive it forward.

“The people who work in it are passionate about the industry and believe in the opportunity it presents,” he explained.

“We all know that we have to adapt to survive and hearing / seeing some of the presentations and reports coming out from the industry leaders in recent months –  I do think we are making progress. Where there is a challenge there is an opportunity and we certainly have challenges in our industry.”

The East India Company’s history can be traced to 1600, when the Company of Honourable Merchants of London trading into The East Indies was granted a Royal Charter by Queen Elizabeth I.

Centuries of trading took place, before the East India Stock Dividend Redemption Act 1873 in the UK Parliament effectively dissolved The East India Company.

In August 2010, Mumbai-born entrepreneur and businessman Sanjiv Mehta relaunched The East India Company to the world.

Today, it trades foods crafted by artisans and specialists from around the world, with carefully sourced ingredients, unique recipes and distinguished provenances.
