In the revered TRBusiness Top 10 International Operators report, we reveal that sales for the globe’s Top 10 international DF&TR operators totalled US$30.83 billion in 2020.

TOP TEN SALES BLOW

A punishing year for the global aviation and maritime sectors resulted in the globe’s retailer protagonists experiencing a collective loss ofUS$20.08 billion (-39.4% yoy), TRBusiness estimates.

In a year defined by lockdowns, travel restrictions and border closures, the industry fought tirelessly to plug haemorrhaging fiscal losses as Covid-19 forced the closure of DF&TR shops worldwide.

Unsurprisingly, every operator in the Top 10 ranking – instructed by sales figures registered in the prior year (in this case calendar year 2020) – suffered sales declines.

The exception was China Duty Free Group (CDFG), which increased its sales by 8.2% year-on-year to $8.05bn to propel it into first position at the expense of long-standing incumbent Dufry Group.

Meanwhile, UKTRF Chair Rachel Bulford talks about her plans to amplify the UK-based association’s advocacy efforts in the October cover interview.

Delve into regional- and category-specific reports in this bumper issue that also contains a highlights reel from last month’s Travel Retail Consumer Forum held in London and hosted by TRBusiness and m1nd-set.

The occasion was the industry’s first large-scale in-person conference of its kind for almost two years.
