Low/no alcohol and nicotine Travel Retail Awards introduced

By Faye Bartle |

Travel Retail Awards 2023.Two new product categories – Low- and no-alcohol and Nicotine (non-combustible) – are launching in this year’s consumer-voted Global Travel Retail Awards to reflect up-to-the minute consumer expectations in the duty free and travel retail channel.

The Low- and no-alcohol award has been created to recognise the rapid rise of the sub-category, which plays an important role in supporting the wellness mentality of consumers, and especially so for Millennials and Generation Zs.

“Is it important to recognise the buying power and influence that these young, travel savvy consumers have over the duty free and travel retail industry’s retail offer – both now and in the future,” said Nigel Hardy, Co-owner and Joint CEO of TRBusiness.

“This new category not only spotlights an emerging consumer preference, but offers a fantastic opportunity for low-alcohol and alcohol-free drinks to be showcased and recognised by shoppers for their innovations.”

The new Nicotine (non-combustible) category echoes the changing landscape in the tobacco sector and the move to provide consumers with potentially reduced risk alternatives to combustible cigarettes.

The award is open to all non-combustible products, such as ‘heat not burn’ varieties, vape, and oral nicotine.

This category will only be evaluated by consumers who are using nicotine and/or tobacco products and who are aged 21 and over.

“We urge suppliers operating in these fields to enter their relevant products to stand a chance of earning a coveted Final, Highly Recommend or Winner seal of approval from m1nd-set’s qualified panel of travelling consumers and our influential bloggers and vloggers,” said Hardy.

“All entrants will receive personalised written feedback from our travel influencers, with a combined following in the millions, which offers a fantastic insight into how consumers see the products as well as the potential ways in which to boost their appeal.”

You can read more about tobacco and nicotine alternatives in our in-depth report, which features in our February 2023 e-zine.

Winners take to the stage to collect their 2022 Global Travel Retail Awards accolades in Cannes.

An important change to note is that, following industry feedback, airports, retailers, rail companies, cruise and ferry companies, and border stores will no longer be automatically enrolled into the awards.

Instead, TRBusiness now welcomes stakeholders from all channels to submit entries with the added ability to provide written feedback and images for consumers’ evaluation.

This new entry process guarantees that shoppers gain a deeper understanding of your ambitions and achievements before they provide their scores.

“The introduction of personalised submissions in 2023 provides industry stakeholders with the opportunity to provide consumers with much more detail,” said Ben Webb, Managing Director, TRBusiness.

“Plus, with categories being refreshed for 2023 to focus on promotional activities and CSR achievements, the consumer judges will be providing their evaluations based on specific initiatives, rather than their overall experience at an airport or a cruise ship, or other channel setting.

“Entrants are encouraged to share why each initiative is important and the impact it has directly or indirectly on consumers’ travelling experiences, such as how an in-store promotion engages with consumers, or the positive impact a sustainability or D&I initiative is having on consumers or the wider world.

“This provides a much more engaging and educational experience for our consumer judging panel.”

Those wishing to enter can check the criteria on the dedicated Travel Retail Awards website. If you need some extra guidance, you can read our top tips on how to enter.
