Lifestyle brand Porsche Design has collaborated with actor Patrick Dempsey to co-create and launch two new eyewear models for travelling shoppers.
Dempsey, best known for his role in Grey’s Anatomy, is also a motorsport enthusiast and has been a brand ambassador for Porsche Design Eyewear since 2021. He jointly designed the new frames, which launched in January 2023.
Ideation for the new models, P’8965 sunglasses and P’8754 prescription frames, started in April 2022 in Los Angeles. The aim for both Dempsey and Porsche Design was to ‘combine aesthetics and functionality’.
The P’8965 sunglasses are available in both black-grey-blue and black-grey colour ways, with the P’8754 prescription frame offered in grey-black and gold-black.
Both models are made predominantly from carbon, a corrosion-resistant material. Carbon fibres, combined with stainless steel and rubber on the temples, give lightness and an optimal fit.
A double bridge provides volume, while the ‘sporty’ temple shape is said to provide a contrast to the front of the eyewear.
Porsche Design: Suited to driving and everyday use
The sunglasses feature VISION DRIVE™ Polarized lenses or VISION DRIVE™ Polarized XTR lenses, which reduce glare on wet surfaces. They are suitable for both driving and everyday use. The XTR lenses also feature a combination of polarization and contour and contrast perception, making them especially suited to low-sun settings.
Just 1,500 sets of glasses of each colour way have been released.
“Porsche has always held a special place in my life,” said Dempsey. “Whether as a racing driver or co-owner of a racing team, the brand exudes a special passion and performance for me that I have always felt connected to. This is precisely why I value Porsche Design as a brand for the highest quality and functionality.
“Now to be actively involved in the design and creation process of an eyewear edition that bears my name makes me very happy and honoured. The exchange with the design experts was very exciting and inspiring.”
