Royal Salute’s limited edition Coronation of King Charles III Edition Scotch whisky launched last week at a dazzling evening event at Westminster Abbey, London.
Pernod Ricard GTR welcomed approximately 200 guests from around the world to the Abbey (the historic setting for British Coronation ceremonies since 1066) for a first look at the standout new release, which celebrates Royal Salute’s rich heritage of honouring milestones of the British monarchy.
TRBusiness’ Managing Editor Faye Bartle was in attendance, along with Mohit Lal, Chairman and CEO at PR GTR, Liya Zhang, Vice President of Marketing, Pernod Ricard GTR, and a number of leading travel retailers, including Dufry and Lotte Duty Free.
“We are honoured to present this illustrious liquid to travellers as a fitting tribute to this historic moment,” said Zhang.
“As we know, travellers are in an exploratory mindset and are seeking newness, innovation and excitement as they return to stores after successive lock downs and travel restrictions.
“There is also great interest in highly exclusive and collectable items such as this, driving a clear premiumisation trend in travel retail.
“We are delighted to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III and cater to our discerning travelling customers with the launch of this resplendent whisky.”
Guests enjoyed a tour of the Abbey, including a glimpse of the coronation throne in advance of King Charles’ coronation on Saturday 6 May 2023.
Next, guests sipped whisky cocktails to the sounds of a live string quartet, before being serenaded by a band on the lawn.
During the seated three-course dinner, Royal Salute Master Blender, Sandy Hyslop, who crafted the Coronation expression, addressed the crowd, explaining how the blend of over 53 rare malt and grain whiskies came to life.
“This expression is a momentous tribute to both the British Monarchy and Royal Salute’s unique origin story,” said Hyslop. “I wanted to mark this memorable occasion with a blend that was as iconic and special as the original Royal Salute 21 Year Old Signature Blend that was created in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
“Crafting this blend has been the perfect occasion to reflect on the innovative approach we’ve taken to blending whisky for the past 70 years, and a moment to look forward to what can be achieved in years to come.”
The result is a rich and complex flavour with notes of fresh redcurrants, dark chocolate praline, and freshly roasted chestnuts, and a palate of sweet figs and fresh ginger leading up to a long and rich finish with a playful spice.
Guests were extremely privileged to try the blend during the evening, as only 500 bottles of the Royal Salute Coronation of King Charles III Edition are available globally.
Each is housed in a Dartington Crystal decanter tinted in a deep sapphire blue hue, which echos the precious stones set within the Imperial State Crown.
The decanter is presented in a wooden box inspired by Westminster Abbey while the jewels and crests of each country forming Great Britain inspired the artwork inside the gift box.
The Royal Salute Coronation of King Charles III Edition has an RRP of US$25,000.
A limited number will be listed at key travel retail locations comprising the following: London, Johannesburg, Amsterdam, Istanbul, Beirut, Zurich, Paris, Tel Aviv, Frankfurt, Vienna, Hainan, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Dubai, Delhi and Sydney.
Royale Salute was first crated as a gift for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the day of her Coronation in 1953. Since then, the aged Scotch whisky brand has continued to create special expressions to capture key moments in history for the British Monarchy.
The launch of the Royal Salute Coronation of King Charles III Edition is the latest addition to the collection of highly collectible items released in recent years, including the Royal Salute Platinum Jubilee Edition in June 2022.
