Allowance increase

The Sri Lankan Government has told local media that it plans to increase the inward value allowance for Sri Lankans returning home from $1,750 to $5,000.

The allowance increase will apply only to Sri Lankans who have been out of the country for more than one year and the government is hoping that the increase will raise the annual revenues from returning Sri Lankans from approximately $2.3bn in 2006 to $3bn this year. Currently, approximately 1.5m Sri Lankans work overseas.
