Edrington Global Travel Retail (GTR) has released The Macallan Folio 7, an expression that recalls a 1984 campaign where scientists visited the Speyside single malt distillery.
The bottling is the seventh release from The Macallan Archival Series, which commemorates the distillery’s print, press and film advertising campaigns from the 1970s to 1990s.
Launched in 2015, each release sees the brand gather anecdotes, drawings and photographs that ran in the campaigns.
The Macallan Folio 7 references the work of Art Director David Holmes and Copywriter Nick Salaman who, alongside illustrator Mary Hogan (née Roberts), created the story of The Boffins Baffled.
Animations depict a group of scientists visiting The Macallan to investigate how the spirit is made.
The Macallan Folio 7: A ‘captivating’ malt
“Crafted to pay tribute to the magic and curiosity of The Boffins Baffled advert of the 1980s, Folio 7 is a captivating single malt whisky which truly reflects the iconic status of the artwork it celebrates,” said Euan Kennedy, Lead Whisky Maker at The Macallan.
“Offering a fruity nose of apple and pear, raisins, milk chocolate and orange peel then gives way to vanilla and baked fruits on the palate, leaving a long, creamy finish with warm spices.
“With its interesting flavours, Folio 7 offers a unique way to experience The Macallan and one of its most unforgettable advertising campaigns from decades past.”
The Macallan Folio 7 is available now from The Macallan Boutiques at Heathrow, Dubai, JFK, Taiwan Taoyuan airports and CDF’s Haikou International Duty Free Shopping Complex. Each 43% ABV bottle is priced at £348/US$434 and includes a booklet commemorating the advertisement.
Last month, Edrington GTR added The Macallan 77 Years Old to its Red Collection, a single malt now available from its global network of travel retail boutiques.
In its 2023 financial results, the supplier confirmed its travel retail sales recovery was “above pre-pandemic levels”. Group revenues rose 22% to hit £1,082.4 million over the 12 months.
