The Balvenie The Week of Peat Aged 19 Years is now available exclusively in global travel retail as a limited edition product, building on the brand’s strategy to introduce a dedicated range of whiskies for its global travel retail (GTR) customers.

Travellers can find it in locations across Australasia, Eastern Europe and Levant, Greater China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, South East Asia, Southern and Western Europe and the US.

The 19 year old expression is the latest addition to The Balvenie’s revered Stories range – a collection of single malts that celebrate inspirational human stories, as told by its craftsmen at the distillery in Dufftown, Scotland.

It enhances the existing The Balvenie Stories GTR range, which comprises Creation of a Classic, which launched in 2021, and The Tale of a Dog Aged 46 years.

The Balvenie The Week of Peat Aged 19 Years stands out as a smoky addition with a footnote of sweet and warming spices to its honeyed flavour, which has been matured in three different types of casks, created by The Balvenie Malt Master’s Apprentice, Kelsey McKechnie.

She explains the concept of The Week of Peat: “For a week a year, The Balvenie distils a batch of peated malt celebrating the traditional whisky making of the past,” said McKechnie.

“This adds an extra layer of peated intensity to our signatured honey character.

“A 19 year old take on Balvenie’s delicately smoky Week of Peat, this expression has matured just a little longer in three separate types of casks resulting in a single malt rich in honey, vanilla and citrus notes with an extra layer of delicate smokiness.

“First-fill and refill American oak bourbon casks amplify the peat’s rich smokiness and draw out a syrupy sweetness while Oloroso sherry butts round it out with a new lingering taste of cinnamon and ginger spice.”

For the annual Week of Peat, The Balvenie distils a batch of peated malt, resulting in a whisky rich in honey, vanilla and citrus notes with an extra layer of delicate smokiness.

The Week of Peat was originally inspired by distillery manager Ian Millar who spotted a week’s gap in the distillery schedule in 2002.

Eager to experiment with The Balvenie profile, he ordered a batch of Speyside peat and headed for the kiln.

The Week of Peat 19 Year Old (48.3% ABV) follows the release of the limited edition The Balvenie The Week of Peat Aged 17 Years, a Clink* and e-comm exclusive, and The Week of Peat Aged 14 Years, available domestically.

The Balvenie Single Malt Scotch Whisky is produced by UK headquartered William Grant & Sons Ltd.
