TR Sustainability Forum: A vehicle for change

By Charlotte Turner |

TR-Plastic-Pledge-TRSF-alternative-leadSimon Best, Senior Vice President, Innovation and New Business, DFI, talks about the formation of the Travel Retail Sustainability Forum (TRSF) – a joint venture with TRBusiness – that is open to all who operate within the duty free and travel retail channel.

In the video below, we learn about the thought process and manifesto that is driving this new vehicle for change within the global retail industry.

As previously announced, the Forum’s first official meeting will take place during the 2020 Summit of the Americas, jointly organised by IAADFS and ASUTIL. Next year’s Summit will be held at the Hyatt Regency Orlando, Florida from 30 March – 2 April.

Please read the TRSF Manifesto here and please find links to the TRSF Facebook and Linkedin pages. To join the conversation on Twitter use #TRSF or #TRSustainabilityForum.

As an industry, we are now well aware that consumers are becoming more discerning with their purchases and seeking to engage in more responsible consumption; businesses are increasingly striving to adopt more environmentally friendly practices in response to these consumer trends and the global environmental concerns, such as climate change, plastic pollution, the depletion of resources and threat to wildlife.

We estimate that the travel retail industry used 10 billion plastic bags in 2018 and sold 3 billion plastic bottles.

To address these concerns and provide a voice and a platform for expression for the industry, TRBusiness joined forces with sustainable business solution provider Duty Free Innovation to create a movement, which is intended to help address these global environmental challenges, with a particular focus on the pollution problem caused by single-use plastics.

Travel Retail Sustainability Forum (TRSF) exhibited at the TFWA Innovation Lab (A 10) during the TFWA World Exhibition in Cannes, enabling its two founding members to reach out to industry stakeholders for the first time in person, since the Forum’s launch in July this year.

The objectives of the Travel Retail Plastic Pledge and Travel Retail Sustainability Forum initiatives are to create a momentum and coordinate an industry-wide drive among all stakeholders to start implementing greener and more sustainable business policies and become more proactive in reducing plastic pollution and offsetting their plastic and carbon footprint.

All interested stakeholders – trade associations, companies and individuals – are welcome to become involved. Please contact Michael Barrett at TRBusiness ([email protected]) for more information.
