TRBusiness celebrates International Women’s Day with DF&TR industry

By Charlotte Turner |

TRBusiness is proud to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) on 8 March with a global community of duty free & travel retail industry executives, including those members of the Women in Travel Retail (WiTR) group, with a dedicated website takeover.

This year’s global IWD campaign asks those observing it to imagine a gender equal world and ‘a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination’.

It continues: “A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women’s equality. Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.”

The official IWD website asks all those opposed to gender inequality to strike the IWD 2022 pose and to share their #BreakTheBias image, video, resources, presentation or articles on social media using #IWD2022 #BreakTheBias to encourage further people to commit to helping forge an inclusive world.  See the IWD website for more details here:

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION WEBINAR

As announced last year, following over 270 meetings (combined) with industry stakeholders during the TFWA World Exhibition in Cannes, it became clear to TRBusiness that the industry is ready to talk about their experiences and also learn from the practices of other like-minded companies in travel retail to guarantee they are doing everything they can to ensure a fair and healthy working environment for staff members.

TRBusiness’ June Diversity & inclusion webinar will offer the duty free & travel retail industry the opportunity to openly discuss all topics related to diversity and inclusion in the workplace, including finding ways to offer appropriate levels of support for employees who may feel excluded for reasons such as their gender, race, sexual orientation, disability, cultural beliefs or religion.

Going one step further, the industry will also be given the opportunity to discuss how these topics impact the experiences of travelling consumers, throughout their journey, including but not limited to, their transition through the airport, using facilities, dining and shopping.

"#BreaktheBias is a welcome reminder to us all to renew our efforts and take positive action to ensure that workplaces in the broadest sense in the duty free and travel retail industry are genuinely free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination."

Travel retail is already doing a lot to #BreaktheBias, said Sarah Branquinho.

HOW CAN DF&TR #BREAKTHEBIAS?

In honour of IWD, TRBusiness asked Chair of WiTR, Sarah Branquinho what the industry can do to help #BreaktheBias.

How important is IWD for WiTR, particularly as our sector continues to recover?

Women in Travel Retail was set up to provide a network and to support and encourage women throughout their careers in the duty free and travel retail industry.  Throughout these last two difficult years, WiTR has seen many of its members affected by the structural changes that have happened in the industry and IWD will give us all the opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the resilience and ingenuity of those women, many of whom have faced significant change in their working lives. Some women have really embraced the change, put their past experience to good use and started to build up their own businesses, and some of them are featured in WiTR’s 2022 webinar programme.

Is WiTR doing anything to mark International Women’s Day?

Our first webinar of 2022 falls on IWD and features two speakers from Diageo – Amy Mooney, Head of Brands, Diageo Global Travel and Sandra Tassilly, Commercial Director APAC, MENA and India, Diageo Global Travel. Amy and Sandra will talk about ‘Finding Your Purpose’, sharing how it has led them to where they are in their careers today. They will explore how to lead with purpose and passion, including empowering teams to deliver the best possible results and achieve a common vision.

More broadly, what can travel retail do to help #BreaktheBias and encourage workplaces free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination?

Travel retail is already doing a lot. It is hugely encouraging to see so many companies in our industry actively engaged in programmes addressing a wide range of issues to make their workplaces more diverse and inclusive, not just in terms of gender. As a global industry, serving customers from all corners of the earth, we are naturally a diverse community in many ways. That diversity is not always evident however, starting with many of the conferences and webinars that we all attend. #BreaktheBias is a welcome reminder to us all to renew our efforts and take positive action to ensure that workplaces in the broadest sense in the duty free and travel retail industry are genuinely free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination.

Ahead of this year’s IWD, Quintessential Brands launched a set of limited edition bottles of Bloom Gin, featuring exclusive artwork designed by acclaimed, female illustrator, Lainey Molnar (see below). “This ethos aligns strongly with Bloom’s brand values and its mission to support, celebrate, and inspire women in all areas of their life,” said the brand.
