Angel is one of great success stories of the French and global perfume industry, according to L’Oréal.

Renowed French fashion designer Manfred Thierry Mugler has passed away, TRBusiness can report.

Mugler, whose bold creations grace haute couture aisles worldwide and have earned him a notable celebrity following, was reportedly 73 at the time of his death.

Social media has reacted to the news with a flood of tributes, including from the fashion world.

A statement from the House of Mugler said: “It is with deep sadness that the House of Mugler announces the passing of Mr Manfred Thierry Mugler. A visionary whose imagination as a couturier, perfumer and image maker empowered people around the world to be bolder and dream bigger everyday.”

Born in Strasbourg in 1948, Mugler created his first personal collection at the age of 25 before founding the eponymous label a year later.

In a Twitter post, Nina Garcia, Editor-in-Chief of iconic women’s glossy magazine Elle, said: “He was truly a visionary. His designs shaped a fashion era and influenced a new generation of designers that weren’t afraid of taking risks. He was a pioneer in mixing art, fashion history music, advertising, technology and celebrity culture into a new form. RIP Thierry Mugler.”

In 1992, Mugler devised the fragrance ‘Angel’, which went on to enjoy success globally.

Nicolas Hieronimus, Chief Executive Officer at L’Oréal said: “It is with deep sadness and emotion that we learned of the death of Manfred Thierry Mugler, an exceptional creative genius who will leave his mark on the French fashion and beauty world for decades to come.

“Manfred Thierry Mugler was always ahead of his time and his creations have inspired a whole generation of new designers. An unwavering and committed pioneer of diversity, inclusion and gender equality, his designs explored new territory, calling on each of us to freely define our own identity and proudly become the person we want to be.”
