WHSmith partners with Starlight to support children in hospital
By Naomi Chadderton |
WHSmith has partnered with UK children’s health play charity Starlight on a new initiative designed to support children and families during hospital visits and stays.
The retailer has introduced a Little Doctor children’s play set across participating WHSmith hospital stores in the UK, with £1 from every £8.99 sale donated to Starlight. WHSmith is also donating a number of the sets directly to the charity for use on hospital wards.
Starlight works to put play at the heart of children’s healthcare, providing resources and training for healthcare professionals as well as campaigning for improved play provision. According to the charity, 71% of hospitals do not have a dedicated budget for play resources, despite evidence that play can help reduce anxiety and fear around appointments and treatment.
Nicola Wilson, Head of Corporate Fundraising at Starlight, said: “Play has the power to reduce fear and anxiety for children in healthcare, and partnerships like this help us reach more families when they need support most.”
Nikki Woodhead, Head of Sustainability at WHSmith, added: “We understand how play can make a real difference to a child’s wellbeing during difficult or unfamiliar experiences, and we’re pleased this initiative will help bring comfort to those visiting our hospital stores.”
The Little Doctor sets are available at participating WHSmith hospital stores from May 2026.
