World Duty Free to double in size as Stansted gets pre-summer makeover

By Luke Barras-hill |

London Stansted Airport (STN) is introducing a medley of new shops, restaurants and bars in time for the summer as part of a £12 million/$15 million refurbishment of its international departure lounge.

Dufry’s flagship World Duty Free walkthrough store, located in the centre of the international departures lounge, will double its footprint.

This is designed to draw travellers’ attentions to duty savings on alcohol and tobacco following Brexit last year.

Manchester Airport Group (MAG) is embarking on a big ‘duty free is back’ education campaign, Ben Green, Retail Director at Manchester Airports Group (MAG) told TRBusiness in an exclusive video interview last year [to watch that video, available in the TRBusiness October e-zine, click here].

New units from Superdry and WHSmith have already unveiled as part of the makeover.

The latter features an attention-grabbing digital exterior fascia and its trademark selection of news and convenience items, plus a shop-in-shop from its airport electronics subsidiary InMotion.

More units are due to be announced in the coming months, adds MAG.

Superdry and WHSmith are new arrivals at Stansted Airport.

Elsewhere, the international departure lounge has introduced new F&B outlets including Comptoir Libanais, Terracotta Italian Kitchen, The Perch, Sunnyside Café, Caffè Nero and a Bottega prosecco bar.

A major recruitment drive is underway aligned with the airport’s recovery from the pandemic, with retail vacancies within a wider mix of roles being advertised on the airport’s website.

Stansted Airport handled 3.5 million passengers in the six months ending 31 September 2021 (+59% year-on-year), according to MAG’s interim report published in December.

Retail concessions including duty free, F&B and airport lounge income across the group’s three airports (Manchester Airport, Stansted Airport, East Midlands Airports) rose by 118.3% to £22.7 million for the period in question.
