Flemingo ‘Starter’ wins at Abu Dhabi

By Doug Newhouse |

Flemingo has won a contract to run a 250sq m supermarket at Abu Dhabi International Airport T3, making its Middle East operational debut.

The new three-year contract will be branded under the ‘Starter’ brand name in T3’s Skypark lounge and be serviced by Flemingo International’s relatively close logistics and warehouse operations in Dubai.

Flemingo already operates several diplomatic supermarkets carrying over 15,000 SKUs (supplied from Dubai) in Africa, which it has been operating for more than ten years.

The retailer says that the store will offer a full range of products, including F&B, fruit and vegetables, deli, dairy, poultry, personal and body care items, plus news, home, tobacco, books and stationary products.

The retailer adds: “Some of the categories like destination, F&B, books and stationary will carry extensive offerings following a “Good – Better – Best” range philosophy, driven by value pricing, while others such as  high-end personal care, soft luggage, gifts and souvenirs and tobacco will carry limited depth and range….”

Flemingo says it aims to create a “world class shopping experience” and will also offer some food and drink options for customers.

The Flemingo Starter brand was launched in 2012 mostly at the supermarket and F&B business, while the retailer’s Xpress convenience offer was launched in 2013. Currently the format has stores in Poland and Costa Rica while Malaysia, Brazil and Indonesia are also said to be in the pipeline.

This format is one of the five rolled out by Flemingo with the others being duty free, diplomatic including online, food and beverage and in-fight thus supporting its vision of 2B.BY 2020.

Kartik Bhatt, Head of Convenience at Flemingo said: “This new contract represents a big step for Flemingo as it enters retailing in the Middle East region. We aim to make this the preferred destination for shopping at the airport through our services and comfortable environment”.
