Mumbai Customs tightens up procedures

By Administrator |

Mumbai Customs is tightening its procedures following the well-publicised smuggling incident involving Customs drivers smuggling whisky into the domestic market from ITDC duty free stocks intended for sale at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (Mumbai).

Customs says it will now have a physical presence at as many points in the supply chain as possible to try and prevent any repetition of the recent embarrassing event. It is also recommending that Customs Officers do not become too familiar with ITDC employees.
Customs officials are now telling the local press that they now plan to conduct checks at the time imported liquor is brought in to the ITDC outlets and also at the point of sale to a foreign national.
Customs are currently talking to an ITDC employee who is alleged to have been implicated in the plot to blatantly remove duty free stock from ITDC stores and sell it on to the domestic market, with complicit help from a handful of Customs' employees.
Importantly, Customs says it will also ensure that the passenger's details are verified at the time of the sale to prevent the previous practice of fraudulently linking paperwork to (non-existent) sales to passengers that have already departed from the airport, but who did not buy anything while they were there.
