According to local press reports, Botswana's Department of Civil Aviation is to upgrade and renovate its airports ahead of the 2010 Fifa World Soccer Cup which is being hosted by neighbouring South Africa.
According to comments attributed to DCA Director Olefile Moakofi, a new and bigger terminal building is to be constructed at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (SSKA), with completion by December 2009.
The report adds that the new terminal building at SSKA will have a capacity to handle 976 passengers at peak times – 375 international arrivals and 375 international departures; 113 domestic arrivals and 113 domestic departures.
Plans also call for a runway extension from the present three kilometres to four. At the same time, airports at Botswana's second city Francistown and those in Maun and Kasane are to be upgraded to accommodate aircraft of Boeing B737 size.
Moakofi said that plans are now advanced to determine the exact retail space that will be needed at SSKA in particular and he is quoted as saying that the majority of shops will be located airside.
