ARI’s John Bolger calls for promotion of duty free in North America

By Charlotte Turner |

John Bolger, Aer Rianta International North America Inc, has told TRBusiness that he thinks more needs to be done to promote duty free in North America.

Bolger says that Aer Rianta North America (ARI NA) has built modern, appealing stores, but the emphasis from now on will be on improving customer service and value offering.

Second will be the promoting of duty free in the region. “We need to improve the promotion of the duty free message….Duty free is not as well understood by Americans and Canadians (compared to the rest of the world) and this remains a major challenge.”

ARI NA’s biggest project without doubt in 2013 was its refurbishment of its store at Montreal International Airport. “This has now been modernised and brought into the 21st century,” says Bolger.

Work was completed on the first phase of the new International Store in Montreal Duty Free before Christmas when the liquor, tobacco, confectionery and souvenirs areas were completed in late December.

The new perfumes and cosmetics area opened in mid-October and the entire renovation, including sunglasses, fashion and leather goods as well as jewellery, is expected to be complete by early March 2014.

“2013 already saw some recovery in the US and 2014 also sees some further optimism on this point,” adds Bolger. “We are seeing most categories growing, but to highlight two from 2013 – liquor and food grew well, even despite our construction.”
