Australian Government approves Sydney Airport’s Master Plan 2045

The plan forecasts that Australia’s busiest airport will handle more than 72 million passengers annually by 2045.

Sydney Airport has received Australian Government approval for its Master Plan 2045, setting out a long-term framework for the airport’s growth and investment over the next two decades.

Approved by Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King, the plan forecasts that Australia’s busiest airport will handle more than 72 million passengers annually by 2045, comprising 36.4 million international and 36.2 million domestic and regional passengers. Sydney Airport’s annual economic contribution is expected to reach around $70 billion, while direct employment at the airport is forecast to rise to more than 105,000 jobs.

The Master Plan provides a framework for investment in terminal capacity, transport connections and passenger facilities. A key element is the proposed redevelopment of the domestic precinct, with plans to bring domestic, regional and international services together through a new integrated terminal experience.

Sydney Airport CEO Scott Charlton said: “As Sydney grows, Sydney Airport must grow with it. Approval of Sydney Airport Master Plan 2045 provides a clear pathway to plan for future demand and invest in the infrastructure Sydney will need over the next two decades. As Australia’s international gateway, this plan ensures we can continue supporting tourism, trade, investment and jobs while delivering the capacity needed for future generations.”

Charlton added that the plan provides a framework for the airport to grow “sustainably and responsibly”, while minimising environmental impacts and working with surrounding communities.

The Master Plan also incorporates Sydney Airport’s five-year Airport Environment Strategy, which sets out measures to reduce emissions, improve climate resilience and support more sustainable airport operations.
