Canadian arrivals shops?
By Administrator |
The Canadian Airports Council (CAC) yesterday called on the Canadian Government to change the law to allow duty free arrivals shops, eliminate airport rents and provide more money for customs services at airports amongst other
things.
The CAC also asked for an increase in the Airports Capital Assistance Program funding levels and improved international air service agreements. Jim Facette, CAC President and Ceo told the committee that the plan would ‘go a long way’ to position Canada's airports as better hubs and create ‘well in excess of C$.30bn ($26.3bn) in economic activities.
Facette told the committee that Canada's airports were uniquely disadvantaged having to pay the government more than C$.300m ($264m) in rent each year and this tax should be eliminated. Especially as funding for airports is now the responsibility of local state governments.
The CAC also called on the federal government to introduce a more flexible international air policy to allow foreign and Canadian airlines the ability to increase the number of international flights and services.
