Canadian border stores outperform airports

The Frontier Duty Free Association reports a 2.8% increase in Canadian airport duty free sales for August 2012 to $22.7 million.

 

The January-August August 2012 sales have seen a 8% increase compared to January-August 2011. Sales at airport CDN duty free shops for January-August 2012 equals $164 million.

 

Overall, the national land border duty free sales figure for August 2012 reached $19.3 million. This is a 13% increase in sales compared to August 2011. The January-August 2012 sales have seen an increase of approximately 3% in sales compared to January-August 2011. Sales at land border duty free shops for January-August 2012 equals $95.8 million.

Prairie Region:

The Prairie Region saw sales of approx. $1.2 million for August 2012. This is an increase in sales compared to August 2011 of approximately 16.27%.

 

For January-August 2012 the Prairie region have seen sales equal $6.7 million with an increase in sales for January-August 2012 compared to January-August 2011 of around 6%.

 

Pacific Region:

The Pacific Sales Figures for August 2012 is $3.4 million. This is a 16% increase in sales compared to August 2011 sales. For January-August 2012 the Pacific region has seen sales reach $16.7 million with an increase for January-August 2012 compared to January-August 2011 of roughly 4%.

 

Ontario:

The Ontario Sales figure for August 2012 is $10.2 million. This is an increase in sales of 13.47% compared to August 2011.  For January-August 2012 – Ontario has seen sales equal $52 million with an  increase in sales for January-August 2012 compared to January-August 2011 of around 3.61%

 

Atlantic/Quebec Sales:

The sales figure for Atlantic/Quebec for August 2012 is $4.4 million, which has an increase in sales of roughly 9% compared to August 2011.

 

For January-August 2012 Atlantic and Quebec regions have seen sales hitl $20 million with an increase in sales for January-August 2012 compared to January-August 2011 of approximately 3%.

 

The main categories that dominate sales in land border duty free are as follows (in order of sales highest to lowest – based on August 2012 numbers):

 

Alcohol (liquor, liqueur, wine, coolers)

Tobacco, Cigars, Loose Tobacco

Perfume, Cosmetics, Skincare

Beer (beer, malt-based coolers)

Food

Jewellery, Watches, Clocks

Accessories (purses, wallets, sunglasses, etc.)

Clothing (including hats, fur, leather)

Souvenirs

Office and Travel Supplies

Glassware, crystal, china, figurines, porcelain

Other

Crafts/Arts

Electronics, Cameras, Binoculars, etc.
