Covid-19: FDFA cancels annual convention on public health grounds

CanadamainCanada’s Frontier Duty Free Association (FDFA) has announced the cancellation of its annual convention, due to be held in November in Toronto [click below for a video statement].

Public gatherings are deemed a risk to public safety in the city, says the association, with the ‘dynamic and unpredictable’ nature of the virus and potential risk of a ‘second wave’ of infection forcing organisations across the industry to rethink their plans.

“The cancellation of this year’s convention is disappointing but a necessary step to keeping our members and convention guests safe,” confirmed Barbara Barrett, Executive Director, FDFA.

“We listened to public health officials, and cannot in good conscience proceed with our convention programme at this time.”

A convivial fixture in the industry’s trade show calendar, FDFA’s annual convention brings together DF&TR shop owners, suppliers, distributors and other industry stakeholders across Canada to connect, network and conduct business.

In lieu of the cancellation, FDFA is pulling together a virtual event series entitled, ‘Until We Meet Again’ to galvanise its partners.

The series will feature educational webinars, cocktail-mixing tutorials and possibly a scavenger hunt or online auction.
