Viking makes approach for Silja Lines

By Administrator |

Viking Line, the third largest travel retail ferry operator in the world with sales of around $200m has indicated interest in taking over Silja Oy, the world?s biggest travel retail operator with sales of around

$250m.
Silja Oy operates as Silja Lines and is owned by Bermuda-based company Sea Containers Ltd. The Mariehamn-based ferry operator plies routes between Sweden and Finland but along with Finnish-based Viking it is said to be keeping tight lipped about any details of its offer.
Sea Containers bought Silja in 2002, but took the decision to sell it late last year after the ferry company?s profits were hit badly by a combination of higher fuel costs, declining duty free sales and saturation in the market.
