Peter Newbould to depart WHSmith North America for pastures new

By Luke Barras-hill |

Newbould’s 10-year tenure with WHSmith International elevated him to the position of MD and SVP InMotion in the US.

Experienced retail executive Peter Newbould will leave WHSmith at the end of this year having spent a decade in international leadership roles with the news, books and convenience retailer.

US-based Newbould is currently Managing Director and Senior Vice President for airport electronics and travel accessories brand InMotion, acquired by WHSmith in 2018.

He leaves WHSmith to return to the UK, where he intends to spend more time with his family and seek new opportunities in the country, preferably within the travel retail sector.

Moving forward, Newbould’s oversight of the InMotion business, responsibility for its financial performance and management of its buying, marketing and central operations functions will be equally devolved to WHSmith North America’s Chief Retail Officer Missy Sage and Chief Merchandising Officer Stuart Michell.

He was formerly Commercial Director – International, and International Trading Director at WHSmith after joining the international division at the beginning of 2014.

Seeking new opportunities

His retail resume includes spells at bookstore chains Landmark, part of India’s Tata Group, and the now-defunct Borders (acquired by Barnes & Noble).

He has also spent time with UK pharmacy and grocery stores ASDA and Superdrug, having originally begun his retail career as a Trading Controller for WHSmith in 1998.

Speaking to TRBusiness, Newbould cites the rollout of InMotion’s in-house brand – with more than 100 skus now available – under his direction as helping to strengthen margins and the operating model, in addition to supporting the refresh of InMotion’s new store layouts and successfully managing the business through the pandemic by merging its back-end functions with Marshall Retail Group to form WHSmith North America.

Newbould (pictured bottom right) appeared in the recent TFWA Electronics & Travel Accessories in Travel Retail webinar co-moderated by TRBusiness.

“I have loved my time at WHSmith and leading the InMotion team, who are such a dedicated group of experts – especially the passionate, store managers  – has been the greatest privilege of my career,” he told TRBusiness.

“I‘ve worked with some brilliant people and I wish them, and the business, every success in the future. I love travel retail and would like to stay in the wider industry. However, after three years of ‘commuting’ to the US while my family stayed in the UK, my first priority is to spend more time with them and then start looking for new opportunities in the New Year.”
