Lagardère secures Marseille travel essentials and duty free contracts

Lagardère Travel Retail France has been awarded both the travel essentials and duty free tenders at Marseille Provence airport, and will extend its growing food and beverage footprint with a new 500sqm restaurant. 

The travel retailer has been operating at Marseille Provence, France’s second largest airport with 9.1 million passengers in 2022, for over 30 years.

Its existing footprint at the airport includes several Relay stores (a leading brand in the travel essentials segment), and Aelia Duty Free stories in core business and fashion and accessories. 

The travel essentials and duty free contract spans an eight-year term, while the restaurant contract runs over 10 years. 

Marseille Provence called the tender as part of its wider overhaul of its Terminal 1 offering, which includes centralising passenger flows to a single screening system.

A new commercial area

Immediately after security, passengers will flow through a 1,000sqm walkthrough store offering duty free perfumes and cosmetics, gastronomy and confectionery, and alcohol and tobacco.

The walkthrough then opens into a new commercial area, where Lagardère Travel Retail France will operate a new 140sqm multi-brand fashion store.

The duty free and travel essentials contract runs for eight years.

A large core duty free store will also open for passengers travelling through the non-Schengen zone.

The travel essentials area will cumulatively span 1,000sqm across four Relay stores, including a new boutique which will house souvenir and local items in a ‘Grand Large’ concept.

Passengers in the domestic area will experience first Relay walk-through store.

Stores in Terminal 2 will also receive a facelift, including the 400sqm duty free area, and an optimised travel essentials space. 

‘Indoor-outdoor’ dining

The new restaurant space from Lagardère Travel Retail France will be strategically located in a public area in the heart of the central building. 

Described as a “living” space, the restaurant offers an “indoor-outdoor” set-up, with a 200sqm sun terrace, and a view of the kitchens.

The menu is inspired by a French-style bakery with pastries and local products.

Last month, Lagardère opened a new branch of YO! at London Luton Airport, its first restaurant in the UK and Ireland.
