Five stores open at New Kansai
By Doug Newhouse |
Five new retail outlets opened in New Kansai International Airport’s Terminal 1 last month, adding to the airport’s 20th anniversary celebrations.
The new duty free shops form part of KIAC’s master plan to increase total retail space in Kansai Airport by 40%.
Among the highlights, Lotte Duty Free became only the second foreign operator to open a duty free shop in Japan after DFS, which runs a downtown duty free store in Naha and a shop in Naha Airport on Okinawa island. It also operates joint venture duty free shops and boutiques with Japan Airlines (JAL) at Tokyo’s Narita and Haneda airports.
As already reported, Lotte Duty Free Shop represents the company’s first outlet in Japan, situated centrally in the main Terminal 1 departure hall shopping concourse.
THREE NEW LUXURY BOUTIQUES
In addition, three new luxury boutiques also opened nearby in a previously unused space along the airside departure hall shopping concourse. Jatco opened a Chloe boutique, while Asahi Airport Service Co Ltd (AAS) unveiled its Ermenegildo Zegna boutique.
Both brands are newcomers to Kansai Airport, with Kushida noting that Jatco plans to open another new boutique in November in Kansai Airport when Victoria’s Secret will appear at the airport for the first time.
Meanwhile, ANA Duty Free (ADF) also opened a new purpose-built Burberry boutique in the south wing last month, replacing its previous Burberry boutique in the T1 north wing. Kushida said ADF has started work on renovating and reconfiguring the former Burberry boutique space into two neighbouring boutiques, selling Tumi and Longchamp products.
The Lotte Duty Free Shop is operated by Kansai Airport Agency Co Ltd (KAA), NKIAC’s retailing subsidiary company, which operates duty free, and tax free shops in Kansai Airport’s Terminals 1 and 2. “The main reason to open Lotte Duty Free is to attract customers from Southeast Asia and China,” said Kushida.
