Macau International Airport reports October traffic growth of +12% as the airport’s new 5-year duty free contracts commenced on November 7.

Passenger volume in October exceeded 460,000 (+12%) compared to October 2013 and MIA reports that between 1-5 October (the Golden Week holiday), passenger numbers passed 74,000, while aircraft movements numbered more than  700 – representing 17% and 10% increases respectively. In total, MIA says it has also recorded over 4.5m passengers between January and October of this year.

In a statement, MIA said: “In November, most of the Mainland China and Southeast Asia routes are expected to grow steadily. Currently, Mainland China occupied 37% of the whole passenger market; Southeast and Northeast Asia accounted for 36%; and Taiwan market accounted for 27%.

SALES WORTH AROUND $160M A YEAR
“MIA will continue to take the advantage of the air freedom, develop more regular and charter air services to further diversify the route network. On the other hand, MIA will launch new Smartphone apps to help promote the efficiency and convenience of MIA.”

As comprehensively reported at the time, CAM – Sociedade do Aeroporto Internacional de Macau awarded its two airside departure contracts to King Power Duty Free (Macau) and Sky Shilla Duty Free last August for a business historically worth just over $160m a year when it was operated solely by King Power.
