Dufry extends key Guarulhos contract until 2032

By Doug Newhouse |

top guarulhos-airportDufry and São Paulo’s International Airport (GRU) have agreed a duty free and duty paid contract extension until 2032, which also includes 2,300sq m of additional duty paid space which will also house a Dufry Shopping megastore in Terminal 2.

This is very significant, since São Paulo Guarulhos is the largest airport in South America handling some 39m passengers last year, including 25m domestic travellers.

It also means that Dufry continues to operate the duty free shops in the airport’s international terminals of two (2) and three (3), which handle all international passengers at GRU.

The world’s biggest DF&TR operator already has 26 duty free stores at GRU, with 22 in T3 and four in T2, with 7,500sq m of space in the former which is allocated to two general travel retail shops in arrivals and departures, plus ‘one of Dufry´s largest walk-through shops in the world comprising 4,350sq m.

BIG NEW OFFER

This terminal also houses 18 boutiques, including Polo Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, Montblanc and Victoria´s Secret.

By contrast, Dufry’s retail presence at Terminal 2 comprises around 4,100sq m of retail space.

Describing the new agreement, Dufry said in a statement: “Following the plan to further develop the successful duty paid segment, Dufry was also awarded 2,320sq m of additional retail space, which among others will be used to open a Dufry Shopping megastore in Terminal 2 as well as last minute shops, improving even more Dufry´s profitability with this new concept.

HUGE DUTY PAID RETAILING OPPORTUNITY

“The megastore will further enhance the offer to domestic passengers with best-selling brands and a unique shopping experience in line with the plans of GRU Airport to remodel and improve the commercial activities.

“Following the excellent success of Hudson with the first convenience shop opened in Terminal 3, Dufry also intends to open another 3 Hudson shops, extending the reach of the convenience concept by offering a comprehensive range of travel essentials.

The new spaces, located at the airside and landside of Terminal 2, are expected to be opened still in 2016. Overall, Dufry will thus operate 16 duty paid shops, totalling around 3,500sq m of retail space in Terminals 1, 2 and 3.

Commenting, Julián Díaz, CEO of Dufry Group said he was naturally pleased with the new agreement which reinforces its position since it began working with GRU in 2012, while providing a showcase for Dufry in Brazil.

He also highlighted the additional duty paid retail space which will now facilitate Dufry’s new megastore, additional Hudson stores as well last-minute shops. This business is one that Díaz believes has only just scratched the surface of its potential, based on his comments in many past interviews with TRBusiness.

Díaz said: “Finally, I would like to thank GRU Airport for the long-lasting partnership and the trust in Dufry. We are confident that together, we will create and deliver an even better shopping and travel experience for all passengers.”
