Global duty free and travel retailer, Dufry, has doubled its shop space at Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima, Peru by opening three new stores using the World Duty Free fascia.
Last week Dufry celebrated the inauguration of its 3,025sq m of refurbished and remodelled space which is now better aligned with the culture and features of the Peruvian capital.
Using a standard curved walk-through format, Lima Duty Free’s commercial offer features all the core product categories as well as watches, leather goods and sunglasses, and boasts 15 new brands. They include Tom Ford, Givenchy make-up, Urban Decay, Viktor & Rolf, Giorgio Armani make-up and Polaroid, seven of which are not currently available in the local market.
A dedicated area called Thinking Peru has elements and materials inherent to Peruvian culture in order to give passengers a sense of place and local identity. A lattice across the ceiling bringing to mind traditional Peruvian fabrics and shoppers can buy souvenirs from turrones and renowned alfajores to bottles of Pisco and chocolate made from local cacao.
Development work to renovate the new stores was done in collaboration with Lima Airport Partners (LAP). The opening was presided over by the CEO of the Latin America Division at Dufry, René Riedi (right in picture); the CEO of Lima Airport Partners Juan José Salmón (left); and the Chief Operations & Commercial Officer of LAP, Sabine Trenk.
Riedi notes that the development “is a clear commitment to long-term investment in one of the major airports in which we operate in Latin America”. He adds: “In addition, the expansion of the commercial space allows us to offer our customers a much more exciting in-store experience, which includes brands that wouldn’t normally be found on the High Street.”
Dufry will be hoping that the new experience will create a strong uplift in sales given that in the first half of 2016, the operator saw underlying performance in Latin America fall by -11.1%.
