Wizz Air adds 1.4m seats from Polish airports

Wizz Air is set to boost traffic across several Polish airports next year thanks to a big expansion drive on the back of an announcement, three weeks ago, that it was opening eight new routes from Warsaw Airport.

The low-cost carrier – which claims to be the largest airline in Central and Eastern Europe [based on scheduled departing seat capacity for the year ended March 2014] – is deploying two new aircraft in Katowice and Poznan, bringing its fleet in Poland to 18 Airbus A320s. This represents +25% capacity growth in 2015, year-on-year.

The airline is also starting new services in early 2015 from Gdansk to Molde (Norway) and Frankfurt Hahn; from Katowice to Belfast; Poznan to Malmo; and from Lublin to Stockholm Skvasta.

With these added services Wizz Air will have a total of 103 routes to 47 destinations from its seven Polish airports, creating an additional 1.4m seats. The airline has also increased frequencies on some of the most popular routes across its Polish network.

TOURISM BOOST

The expansion in the capital city and the Polish regions is expected to stimulate the aviation jobs market and tourism, especially as the airline claims that many cheap tickets are already available.

On the newest routes as well as the entire summer 2015 schedule from Poland prices start at PLN 39 ($12.44) one way (including taxes, non-optional charges and one small cabin bag).

In Warsaw yesterday, József Váradi (left), CEO of Wizz Air said: “In just three weeks we have announced three new aircraft, 13 new routes and 1.4 million additional seats in 2015. Wizz’s ever-expanding network and increasing frequencies on existing routes will certainly attract more passengers travelling on leisure or business. Our growth will generate over 1,400 jobs across Poland.”
