Sydney International pax +7% as 2017 closes in on record

Qantas over SydneySydney Airport is heading for another record year for international traffic, with passenger numbers up +7.1% to 1.3m in September and by 7.6% to 11.7m in in the January to September year-to-date period.

 

This compared with a nominal -o.8% decrease in domestic passengers to 2.2m during the month and a +1.2% rise to 20.1m between January and September.

 

STRONG INTERNATIONAL RESULTS

Commenting on the results, Sydney Airport Managing Director and CEO Kerrie Mather said: “September international passenger growth remains strong at 7.1% versus the prior corresponding period (pcp).

 

“This growth continues to be driven by seat capacity increases from new and existing airline customers (+6%), in addition to improving load factors.

“The destinations with material passenger growth in September were Vietnam, up 85% (12,000 passengers), China up 32% (31,000 passengers) and South Korea up 21% (6,000 passengers).

 

“Domestic passenger numbers declined by 0.8% for the month, due to adverse weather events and a strong pcp.”

 

ather added that the year ‘is shaping up to be another record’, with Sydney handling nearly 43m passengers over   the latest rolling 12-month period.

 

’32M PAX AND COUNTING’

She added that the airport is already heading for 32m passengers now with another quarter period to go with the peak Christmas run in.

Mather concluded: “We are pleased to again be reporting our nationality statistics this month which show the continuation of growth across our key markets. Year to date, the growth from our Asian neighbours is outstanding, particularly China, India, Indonesia and Korea. In addition, our more traditional markets such as UK and US continue to deliver solid growth.”
