Tokyo Narita airport diversifies retail offer

By Doug Newhouse |

New shops ‘never been seen at an airport before’ are opening for both temporary and permanent periods at Tokyo Narita International Airport.

In line with the airport management’s determination to broaden its retail offer and make it generally more interesting, the German footwear brand Birkenstock is being featured for a limited period (until September 30). Its products are now on show in Terminal 1, as are those from Japanese manufacturer Cosmétics Makanai (permanent presence from July 7) which is also exclusive to Narita Airport.

Birkenstock’s store is located in the Central Building on the fourth floor. The company boasts a manufacturing tradition dating back more than 230 years and it is featuring special edition fashions from its portfolio, along with sandals, clogs, shoes and other favourites.

TRADITIONAL JAPANESE PRODUCTS
By contrast, Cosmétics Makanai’s products are said to be made from natural ingredients which were developed by female workers in the harsh working environment of the Yoshitaka Gold Foundry – established in 1899 in the city of Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture.

The company claims that its hand creams, face lotions and other products were created in response to the ‘extremely harsh working environment’ of the gold foundry and are said to be kind to the skin and provide protection against dryness.

Cosmétics Makanai’s products can also be found in the Central Building on the fourth floor of T1.

NEW ENTRIES IN TERMINAL 2
Fashion products from the ‘rough’ store company are also being made available for a limited time only in Terminal 2 in the Main Building on the fouth floor. From July 6 to September 3 the company is offering ‘a selection of laid back, comfortable ladies fashions and accessories’, with the emphasis on casual relaxation.

In the same location, LAUREL’s body care products manufactured in Hokkaido, Japan, are also being offered between now and September 3. The company describes these as a simple presentation of natural ingredients which are designed to improve the complexion.

Various new F&B offers are also opening in both terminals at Narita in the near future.
