Heinemann Duty Free drives ‘VR gamification’ in Berlin

Passengers at Berlin Schönefeld Airport are in with the chance of winning a discount of up to 20% off their purchases in Heinemann Duty Free as part of a festive promotion.
A competition staged within a special activation area encourages travellers to burst ‘virtual’ balloons using an Augmented Reality (AR) app and iPad.
Higher discount incentives are linked to the number of ‘virtual’ balloons popped in a 30-second period by engaging with the iPad, with those bursting 1,000 balloons entitled to a gift card worth €100 ($118).
BLURRED RETAIL BOUNDARIES
The live image from the iPad will be transferred via AppleTV to the promotion screens in the shop, alerting customers to take part in the game.
The app has been developed in partnership with SchönenbergFilm GmbH, with operator Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB) publicising the promotion via its social media channels and in its own app.
“The boundaries between online and offline shopping are becoming increasingly blurred,” commented Steffen Jopp, Managing Director of Heinemann Duty Free in Berlin.
“It is our ambition that we are creating an insight into the virtual world for our international customers in game form. With the app, we have our finger on the pulse and are demolishing the bridges between both worlds.”
Heinemann Duty Free adds that the early signs point towards success for the promotion, with individual AR experiences such as this set to be expanded to the travel retailer’s other operations.
