Travel restrictions due to the coronavirus affected traffic volumes at Zurich Airport in June.

Revenue from commercial activities at Flughafen Zürich (Zurich Airport) suffered a 79% decline to CHF11.4 million/US$12.13 million in June year-on-year.

Airside revenue dropped by 94.9% and landside by 55.1% in June compared to the same month last year.

Spend per departing passenger hovered between CHF21-CHF23 in the first three months of this year, before falling to CHF10 and under in April and May, and climbed to CHF16.4 in June.

A 93% plunge in passenger traffic to 201,692 passengers in June year-on-year poured pressure on the business, with Intercontinental routes suffering a 97.7% decline, while European traffic dropped by 91.6%.

Local traffic volumes fell by 92.2% and transfer traffic declined by 95.6%. The rate of transfers also slipped to 18.7% from 28.9% in the same period last year.

The airport expects passenger numbers to pick up due to the beginning of the summer holidays, albeit from a low base, with more than 25,000 passengers are tipped to depart, arrive or transfer at Zurich Airport.

Last week, the airport reopened its stores and restaurants.
