DutyFreeList website twins airport and inflight preorder
By Luke Barras-hill |
A new all-in-one portal allowing travelling consumers to source and preorder duty free products from airport and inflight duty free has launched into travel retail.
Created by former Duty Free World Council Research and Administration Manager Kshitij Goyal, DutyFreeList.com enables passengers to select their departure or arrival airport online and browse and add products to an inventory, before orders are verified and placed for collection at the chosen airport or airline.
“Currently, many retailers already have pick-up points at duty free areas at airports – we would like to have retailers, airports (managing their own duty free) and airlines involved with DutyFreeList,” said Goyal.
AIRPORT RETAILERS & AIRLINES ‘INTERESTED’
DutyFreeList offers an annual subscription model based on approximate passengers and product ranges available from airport and inflight duty free partners, who will benefit from 0% commission.
In turn, brands are also able to advertise on DutyFreeList.com and via social media for a fee and consumers purchasing online can benefit from a pay later option to ease concerns over sharing credit details.
“The annual subscription model from each location will help us to generate revenues and build the online business and we are very positive that this will be more attractive and suitable to the retailers as a commissioned-based model for each transaction will lead to even more pressure on the margins of airports, retailers and airlines in an increasingly competitive industry,” said Goyal.
The website is now live and includes information on airport, retailer and airline merchandising, which is set to become more comprehensive over time, in addition to a product showcase for new launches by brand.
The portal has been tested to support a variety of locations with multiple offers across products and categories advertised by different airlines and duty free locations to provide a clear, user-friendly experience.
“We are close to getting approval from a few airport retail groups and a couple of airlines,” added Goyal.
He says DutyFreeList will be different from other preorder duty free websites, which may focus on selected regions with home delivery options that restrict travellers from experiencing all duty free shop offers.
In addition, companies are not always permitted to showcase their latest brands, which are updated via their own websites.
CUSTOMISED DUTY FREE OFFERS
The idea for the website originated during last year’s TFWA World Exhibition & Conference technology workshop session, in which m1nd-set shared a survey reporting to show that 64% of travellers desire an all-in-one portal to purchase duty free, with 66% interested in a pre-order and pickup service.
In a presentation, DutyFreeList identifies multiple log-in accounts to shop at different online duty free stores as a barrier to purchase, with an inconsistent user experience contributing to a low preorder rate.
The company says it is negotiating that challenge by providing one login account for multiple online duty free stores, with the ability to tailor customised offers at different locations online.
“Travellers are now developing a pre-planned buying attitude with product exclusivity and convenience playing a very important factor in their final purchase,” adds Goyal.
“An all-in-one portal such as DutyFreeList with exclusive products from different duty free locations aligns itself with the current trend we see in retail.”
DutyFreeList is now working on finalising airport locations to be included online, alongside images and prices of products
