Frankfurt hits new record as Fraport traffic is also strong

Top Frankfurt Airport 2016The Fraport Group of airports has reported strong numbers for both Frankfurt Airport and its international portfolio in both June and the first six months of 2017.

 

The company’s performance at Frankfurt Airport continued to be strong as it handled 5.8m passengers (+5.3%) in June with a little assistance from the early start of some of Germany’s school vacation periods.

 

FRAPORT’S BUSIEST JUNE ‘EVER’

At the same time, Fraport’s airports also experienced the ’busiest June ever’, as overall traffic rose for the eighth month in a row and cargo also increased by 4.7%. Meanwhile, Frankfurt also handled nearly 30m passengers in the first six months of the year, corresponding to a rise of nearly 30m passengers.

 

The airports’ company said this corresponded to a 4.5% rise – or 1.3m passengers – compared to the same period in 2016, creating a new all-time record at Frankfurt Airport.

 

Fraport’s international airports also performed strongly and at different levels over the six-month period as a whole, with Ljubljana Airport in Slovenia handling 722,943 passengers in the first six months of 2017 (+20.8%) compared to the same period in 2016.

Peru’s Lima Airport also showed strong growth with a rise of 8.4% to almost 9.7m passengers in the six-month period, with 1.6m contribution in June (+9.5%), while the Bulgarian airports of Varna and Burgas on the Black Sea coast served nearly 1.3m passengers combined a rise of 9.4%, with a June contribution of 852,399 passengers (+9.3%).

 

The 14 Greek airports also achieved combined traffic growth of 11.9% to total 9.6m passengers in the first half, while the month of June contributed 3.9m (+16). In June, the busiest of the Greek airports included Rhodes Airport with 795,470 (+9.5%), Thessaloniki with 653,227 (+20.5%); and Kerkyra on Corfu with 477,099 (+8%).

Antalya Airport where both arrivals and departures duty free shops are traditionally very popular with Russian holidaymakers who are now back in large numbers once again.

WELCOME RUSSIAN RETURN…
There was also a welcome healthy performance on the Turkish Riviera – a traditional holiday spot for high spending Russians – with Antalya Airport handling nearly 9.5m passengers in HY1 – a major gain of 29.4% helped by a June contribution of 3.3m passengers – up an impressive 77.6%.

 

Meanwhile, back in northern Germany, Hanover Airport registered about 2.6m passengers between January and June (+4.9%) with a June contribution of 573,827 passengers (+10%), while Pulkovo Airport (LED) in St. Petersburg, Russia, recorded strong traffic growth of +25.4% to 7.1m passengers, including 1.7m in the month of June (+23.8%).

 

Last, but certainly not least, China’s Xi’an Airport continued to perform extremely well with traffic up 14.4% to 20.1m helped by a 3.4m (+15.2%) contribution from passenger numbers in the month of June.
